Monina: Creator of The Heritage Line

Growing up, I was surrounded by creativity. Colorful fabrics, patterns, sewing machines, and my mother’s eye for beauty and attention to detail shaped the world around me. I watched the joy her work brought to others, and in turn, the joy it brought to her life.

My mother, Monina, is the creative matriarch of our family, a Puerto Rican fashion designer whose work has shaped generations.  As a young girl, Monina leaned into the art of sewing, learning from her grandmother. The skills she gained became a form of self-expression that she carried with her throughout her life and career. Art spoke to her in many forms. As a bohemian in the 1960s, her love of art and creativity led her to co-own an art and design gallery in Old San Juan. Living and working among artists and creatives, the art world became her home, and her passion for design deepened as her life and work were shaped by that community.

My mom’s creative spirit continued to grow and evolve as she raised me and my sister. She began designing and producing her clothing line, known by the bold label Monina. Her designs quickly caught the attention of the fashion industry, presenting collections that blended impeccable construction, elegant lines, and a deep understanding of the woman who would wear her designs.

Her work continued to be noticed and admired. She was awarded the Premio Laurel three years in a row. This recognition celebrated her creativity and her powerfully sophisticated contribution to the image of Puerto Rico’s fashion industry. Her designs were described as boldly elegant, classic, and “verdaderas obras de arte”, true works of art. 

My mother has inspired my life by example. She has led with strength, talent, and tenacity. To share in her passion at this point in our lives, and to collaborate with her creatively through Gracewell, is an honor I cherish. I am my mother’s daughter. I have discovered the same joy and passion for creating designs that express joy, classic simplicity, and color in a way that empowers the wearer.
