Debra Irizarry

Debra Irizarry, Artist

My sister, Debra, has always spoken in the language of art. Long before I understood what creativity meant, I understood her world. It was a world where objects were not just objects. They had names. They had voices. They carried tenderness. Even now, those early creations still tug at something deep in me.

She helped raise me in Puerto Rico, and in doing so she shaped the way I see beauty. I remember paintbrushes resting in jars, music moving through open rooms, candles glowing in the evenings, and love woven into everything. In her presence, art was not separate from life. It was life.

Imagination and creativity are a part of her storytelling. Debra's art is now focused on three dimensions. Her sculpted works hold presence. Each piece carries a pulse, a personality, a story waiting to be felt.

A Creative History

The Early Years.

Family Collaborations.

In the early days, fashion collaborations with our mother, Monina, were guided by structure and flow. As her art evolved, freedom became a foundational element.

Debra has proposed an exciting new chapter of collaboration. The idea will begin to take shape this year. A piece may start in Debra's hands, move to mine, and find its way to our mother. Each of us adding something of our own honoring our shared love for art, creativity, and expression. I will share as the process begins to unfold.

Gallery Two

The 2D World.

In these 2D works, color and symbol become story. Two-dimensional in form, they carry the presence of sculpture. Emotion moves through layered surfaces, inviting the viewer to step inside a world of narrative, creative expression, and free flowing imagination.

Gallery Three

The Digital Expansion.

Blending 360 degree video, virtual painting, projection mapping, and layered digital effects, she creates worlds that feel both surreal and deeply intimate. Technology becomes another brush in her hand, not separate from her practice but an extension of it. Her series Jornadas Cuanticas explores the intersection of spirituality and the quantum self, weaving together moving image, abstraction, and symbolism. The result is a body of work that feels expansive yet grounded, experimental yet rooted in meaning.

From Canvas to Form

The 3D World.

The figures, symbols, and textured narratives that once lived on canvas began to ask for more space. Her movement into 3D reflects her artistic growth and spiritual expansion.

As an art therapist and ceremonial artist, Debra understands the power of embodied presence in artistic expression, and these works hold emotion, intention, and energy. In sculpture, stories stand tall, take on physical form, and meet the viewer eye to eye.

A Sacred Practice

Art in Relationship with Nature.

Her art is created in relationship with the natural world. Nature is not a backdrop for her work; it is a collaborator. She sources materials with reverence, asking permission before collecting stones, wood, or found elements. She looks for a sign, a face revealed in rock or landscape. When she sees it, she takes it as nature's consent. Her sculptural work, materials are reclaimed cardboard, wood, and glue. Materials now include cement, chicken wire, mosaics, and fabric, chosen so her creations might endure beyond the now. Each sculpture carries a presence. They are beings, each with a story and a personality of its own.

Looking ahead, Debra envisions opening her home as a sacred healing space. Part gallery, part gathering place. Where others can reconnect with creativity as medicine. Her intention is to offer workshops, foraging practices, and experiences rooted in nature, ancestry, and creative expression. This space will be open to adults, children, and anyone longing for connection, belonging, and restoration.
